PIHS and Washburn tops in EM Class B and Class D standings

   The victories keep coming for the Presque Isle and Washburn girls’ basketball teams.

    Presque Isle sits atop the Eastern Maine Class B Heal Point standings with an 8-0 record.

    Washburn is pacing the way in Class D with a 9-0 record. Van Buren is second, followed closely by Central Aroostook. Other local teams in the playoff picture are Fort Fairfield in fourth, No. 6 Easton and LCS/MSSM at No. 13.

    Here’s a recap of games played through Monday, Jan. 9:

    Central Aroostook 45, Easton 30 — At Mars Hill Monday, the Central Aroostook Panthers upped their record to 7-2 with a 15-point win over the Easton Bears.

    Victoria McIntyre paced the Panthers with a double-double, 18 points and 11 rebounds. Kayla Cushman chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds for the winners.

    Carla Halvorson led 6-4 Easton with seven points.

    Limestone/MSSM 40, Madawaska 34 — The Eagles faced a halftime deficit of two points on the road in Madawaska Monday night, but outscored the Owls 13-6 in the third quarter on the way to their fourth victory.

    Melissa Cantafio led the 4-6 winners with 11 points while Danielle Pelkey and Alexis Bell each added eight.

    Nicole Cyr paced 1-8 Madawaska with 15 points.

    Washburn 76, GHCA 27 — At the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Monday night, Mackenzie Worcester scored 17 first-half points to propel Washburn to the win.

    Worcester finished the game with 23 points while Carysn Koch added 14 and Carmen Bragg 13 for 8-0 Washburn.

    GHCA (0-5) was led by Colby Walker with 10 points.

    Presque Isle 65, Hermon 35 — The Presque Isle Wildcats upped their record to 8-0 with a 30-point win over the Hawks on Saturday in Hermon.

    Chandler Guerette scored 17 points to lead the Wildcats and Meredith Stewart added 16. Kayla Richards chipped in with 11.

    Britney Hamlin paced Hermon (7-3) with 10 points.

    Fort Fairfield 68, Limestone/MSSM 36 — The Tigers used a big second quarter advantage, 26-3, en route to a 32-point win over the Eagles.

    Amanda Hotham scored 20 points to lead 6-1 Fort Fairfield and Danielle Tracy added 19.

    Melissa Cantafio paced the 3-6 Eagles with 13 points and Jordyn Hopkins added six.

    Old Town 56, Caribou 34 — At Old Town Saturday, the Coyotes showed scoring balanced in recording the victory over the Vikings.

    Ashley Abbott scored 13 points for the 6-4 winners.

    Jamie Martin paced 1-8 Caribou with 10 points while Becca McDougal and Alexa Massey each added seven.

    Washburn 62, Ashland 30 — The Washburn Beavers remain undefeated following a 34-point home win over Ashland on Saturday.

    Freshman Mackenzie Worcester led the way for Washburn with 25 points. Sophomore Carmen Bragg chipped in 19 points.

    Kayla Cote scored 22 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead 3-7 Ashland.

    Central Aroostook 62, Katahdin 32 — At Stacyville Friday, Central Aroostook showed off a balanced scoring attack while improving to 6-2.

    Kayla Cushman scored 18 points for the Panthers and Victoria McIntyre added 17. Rachel Grew hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.

    Megan Merry paced 2-7 Katahdin with 15.

    Easton 44, Ashland 34 — At Easton Thursday, Ariana Babineau scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to power the Bears to victory.

    Hannah Ferris chipped in with seven points and 11 rebounds for the winners.

    Marissa Chasse led Ashland with 12 points and Anna Paradis added 10.

    Fort Fairfield 65, Hodgdon 48 — Amanda Hotham scored a game-high 29 points in leading the host Tigers over the Hodgdon Hawks Wednesday night.

    Sydney Churchill added 12 points for 5-1 Fort Fairfield.

    Hodgdon (4-4) was led by Lacey McQuarrie with 14 points; Haley Gardner added 12 and Mariah Wiley connected for 11 points.

    Washburn 55, Wisdom 20 —     At Saint Agatha Wednesday, freshman Mackenzie Worcester scored 17 points and sophomore Carmen Bragg added 16, as Washburn remained unbeaten.

    The Beavers are now 6-0 on the season.

    Ashley Beaulieu led 1-6 Wisdom with 11 points.

    Presque Isle 83, Fort Kent 29 — At Fort Kent Jan. 3, the unbeaten Wildcats jumped out to a 24-3 lead at the end of the first quarter en route to their seventh victory.

    Krystal Kingsbury and Hannah Graham each scored 14 points to lead Presque Isle while Megan Ireland and Meredith Stewart contributed 12 apiece.

    Sam Carapellucci scored 12 points to lead the 5-3 Warriors.

    Houlton 49, Caribou 42 The host Houlton Shiretowners jumped out to an early lead against the Caribou Vikings on Jan. 3, and made enough free throws in the final quarter to post a 49-42 win.

    Houlton led 33-21 at the half. Caribou cut the lead to six by the end of the third quarter. Houlton didn’t score a field goal in the fourth, but scored the 10 points from the line.

    Marina Cameron paced 4-2 Houlton with 20 points, including a 10-for-12 free throw effort. Tori Hanson hit three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points.

    For 1-7 Caribou, Rebecca McDougal scored 20 points while Alexa Massey added 13 points.
