Nordic skiers sprint for County title

    MADAWASKA — The Caribou Vikings Nordic team continued their winning ways, capturing the first leg of the Aroostook County Ski Championships. Both the boys and girls won the 5k classical meet at Madawaska on Feb. 7.

    The Caribou girls totaled nine points, followed by Fort Kent (41), Ashland (57), Fort Fairfield (59) and Presque Isle (76).

    Local skiers in the top 15 were: 1, Ashley Richard, CAR, 19:10; 2, Sarah Doak, CAR, 19:19; 3 (tie), Kendra Stephens, CAR, 19:59 and Katie Plourde, CAR, 19:59; 5, Chelsea Bard, CAR, 20:12; 6, Lydia Streinz, ASH, 20:31; 7, Hannah Streinz, ASH, 20:33; 10, Samantha Murchison, CAR, 21:01; 11, Mackenzie Belyea, CAR, 21:03; 12, Olivia Sleeper, CAR, 21:25; 13, Ginger Kieffer, CAR, 22:14; and 14, Meridith Sleeper, CAR, 22:15.

    In the boys’ race, Caribou was first with 14 points, followed by Presque Isle (45), Fort Kent (49), Madawaska (53 and Fort Fairfield (106).

    Local skiers in the top 15 were: 1, Caleb Chapman, CAR, 15:49; 2, Jesse Rochester, PI, 16:22; 3, Jesse Sandstrom, CAR, 16:42; 4, Ryan Washington, CAR, 17:02; 5, Jon Rochester, PI, 17:24; 6 (tie), Brenden Cyr, CAR and Kjetil Rossignol, CAR, 17:34 and 8, Josh Kovach, 17:39.

    The freestyle portion of the Aroostook County Championships was held yesterday at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle. Those results will be in the paper next week.
