CARIBOU — Democrats from Caribou, Caswell, Connor, Limestone, Madawaska Lake and Stockholm will kick off the 2012 campaign season at the party caucus on Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center at 1 p.m. (with noon check-in).
As Chair of the Caribou Democratic Committee Jessica Feeley explained, the caucuses are the front lines of grassroots politics. In addition to the presidential nomination process, attendees select delegates to the Democratic State Convention, elect Municipal Officers and County Committee members, and discuss national and local policy issues affecting all Maine people.
Democratic candidates, State Sen. Troy Jackson (D-Allagash) and representatives from Democratic campaigns will attend. Feeley says that attendees are asked to bring their viewpoints, ideas and questions for discussion.
Any registered independent voter who would like to enroll as a Democrat may do so at their town office or at the caucus.
“Town clerks will be at the check-in tables,” Feeley said. “Due to the tremendous efforts this past fall by Democrats across Maine, same-day voter registration is allowed.”
Feeley also explained that members of her party would also like to extend a special invitation to their neighbors who will be 18 years of age on or before Nov. 6, 2012 and want to become members of the Democratic party.
“You are allowed to vote at the caucuses and primaries, but you must register with your town clerk,” she explained. “You will need to bring the proper identification documents (i.e. birth certificate and a government issued picture ID) in order to complete this task.”
