BANGOR — The chair of the University of Maine System Board of Trustees announced last week that the board’s executive committee has appointed Dr. James H. Page as the System’s next chancellor.
“Dr. Page’s experience — both in an academic setting and in running a multi-faceted Maine business — make him an ideal choice as our next chancellor,” explained M. Michelle Hood of Bar Harbor, UMS Board chair. “The UMS Board recently adopted a new set of goals and actions to move the University System forward in key areas of student success, workforce development and cost control — and Dr. Page is the right type of leader to move Maine’s public universities to the next level.”
Page, age 59, will begin work at the System on March 20. He is currently principal and CEO of the James W. Sewall Company in Old Town, and also serves as an adjunct professor in UMaine’s Department of Philosophy. Prior to his employment with Sewall, he was assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Kansas.
“The University of Maine System is a critical, statewide educational and economic resource for the people of Maine,” Page noted. “I am deeply honored by this opportunity afforded by the Board of Trustees to lead it forward during these challenging times.”
A unique characteristic which distinguishes Page from any of the other eight persons who have served as chancellor is the fact that he was born and raised in Maine and educated at one of the System’s universities.
Page lives in Old Town, is married to Liane Judd and they have one daughter. He grew up in Caribou. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in history at the UMFK, attended Harvard University, obtained a master’s degree in philosophy from St. Andrews University in Scotland and received a doctoral degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He currently serves on several boards related to the University of Maine at Orono including the Board of Visitors, UMaine Foundation and Advisory Board to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Page will succeed Dr. Richard L. Pattenaude, 65, who is stepping down, after serving as chancellor since 2007. Page’s annual salary will be $277,500.
