115 Years Ago: March 4, 1897

• Miss Lottie Sampson, who has been taking lessons in china painting in Boston for the past two weeks, arrived home Wednesday.

• Caribou village has 716 pupils under 21 years of age. In the town there are 1,783 pupils under 21 years of age.

1958 — Gathered around the campfire at the annual Blue and Gold Banquet of Cub Pack 185 are 10 of 11 new Bobcats. The 11 youngsters who were welcomed into Cub Scouting are: Michael Richardson, Brent Gagnon, Ronald Somers, John Miller, Thomas Umphrey, Bruce Fitzpatrick, Gary Lloyd, Michael O’Leary, Walter Jager, Lloyd Chase and Richard Fortier.

• The potato market appears a trifle weaker this week than last. Sixty cents per barrel is the highest price paid today.

• Seven inches of snow fell on Wednesday.

100 Years Ago: Feb. 29, 1912

• Herbert Drake bought a very handsome team, 4- and 5-year-old black geldings from Hopkins Bros. of Fort Fairfield on Monday of this week. The horses weigh 3250 pounds.

• Dr. M.L. Bonney arrived in Caribou this week, and will shortly reopen his dental parlors at his old stand, over H.O. Spencer’s Jewelry Store.

• Over 60 citizens went from Woodland by train on the electric road to Presque Isle Monday night to attend the show, “Graustark.”

• Miss Evelyn Smith will start Saturday for Boston to attend the wholesale and retail millinery openings, also to buy goods for the spring season.  

75 Years Ago: March 4, 1937

•  The board of directors of the Aroostook Production Credit Association at a meeting on Feb. 26, adopted a resolution of voluntary liquidation and voted to surrender its charter on March 10 according to a letter sent this week to Class B stockholders in the association. Farmers in the vicinity of Caribou will have an opportunity late this week to organize a local production credit association of their own and to start with a clean slate to build a co-operative farm loan agency if they wish to do so.

• Thomas Bouchard has sold to George Tupper of Perham, a 50 hp diesel tractor which Mr. Tupper will use as a wood-sawing outfit and for other purposes. This is about one-half as large again as the diesel tractor now owned by the town of Caribou.

• Wesley Johnson of Westmanland won first prize in the 440-yard ski dash and third prize in the six-mile ski race at the Winter Carnival at Stockholm last Friday.

• Mabel Allen will leave Saturday to attend the International Beauty Show at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. During her absence the shop will be in charge of Mrs. Hope Blake.

50 Years Ago: March 1, 1962

• Caribou Masonic Lodge No. 170 held a special meeting on George Washington’s birthday when Past Masters’ Night was observed. Edgar W. Russ, who is observing his 58th Masonic anniversary and is a past master, having served in 1921, was honorary worshipful master and opened the lodge.

• Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Larkin entertained at dinner in honor of their granddaughter, Kim Bethany Tibbetts, on her eighth birthday. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Tibbetts and son, Kirk, Mrs. Emily Tibbetts and Bruce Larkin.

• Mr. and Mrs. Guy Page of Stockholm entertained in honor of their son, Jeffrey, on his eighth birthday. Guests were Heather Joy, Brenda Johnson, Jean Sandstrom, Patricia Johnson, Joan Plourde, Galen Forsman, Glenn Sodergren, Bruce Sandstrom, Kenneth Albert, David Lausier, David Sjostedt, Tommy Peterson, Donald Sjostedt, David Quist and Steven Brissette. The guest of honor received many gifts and cards.

• The third annual Winter Carnival, sponsored by the Woodland PTA, will be held Saturday, March 3. King and queen candidates are: Judy Dow and Eveard Doody; Pamela Shaw and Donald Doak; Rhonda Moir and Darrell Stubbs; Beverly Anderson and Paul Everett; Carol Anderson and Gordon Wark; and Marlene Norbeck and Gregory Cyr.
