Sixth Grade and ME: Memories and Experiences

By Gabrielle Jandreau

We have had many great memories and experiences. At the middle of the school year we had a potlatch, which is a feast celebrated by Northwest Coast Indians that we studied. It was one of the best experiences of my sixth-grade career.
During the potlatch we had exquisite food! We got all of the food from people in my class brining in food. Some food items we had were: bear, moose, red-tail deer, white-tail deer, partridge, fish, maple syrup, ploys, potatoes, corn and fiddleheads. The class and I got the ideas from the foods we read about that the Incas, Mayans, and Aztecs ate. This was the first time many students had tasted some of the wild game meats.
I was so excited when I found out we had so many volunteers! The jobs they had were serving, cooking, and explaining food.
I had a magnificent time during the 2011-12 potlatch. I wish I could do it again. It’s a memory I will never forget!
