The Houlton Junior High School cheerleaders were runners-up in the Division II Junior High School/Elementary State Cheering Championships held March 10 at the Bangor Auditorium.

The Houlton cheerleaders impressed the judges who commented on a “nice job” to “showy opening” and “creative” routine.

The Houlton girls’ “Roll Out the Red Carpet” featured stunting, dancing and tumbling. Helping with choreographing the routine was Marcie Hernandez, a former cheerleader and recent graduate of Houlton High School.

“They performed a solid routine,” said Houlton coach Renae Foley. “I was extremely pleased with their second-place finish. They are a young squad with 14 seventh-graders and many who were cheering for the first time.”

Eight cheerleaders who will be advancing out of the junior high program are Taylor Barnes, Abby Fore, Piper Flewelling, Sammy Grahn, Katie Knights, Mariah O’Neal, McKaylee Michaud and Sam Montrose.

Seventh grade cheerleaders are Chloe Davis, Medinah Diane, Hannah Foley, Lexi Fore, Josie Hare, MacKenzie Hunt, Hannah Jacobs, Toni MacDonald, Megan McLaughlin, Taylor Reed, Tessa Roshto, Rachel Toupin, Brittany Vargas and Maraya Kini.

“Several girls were making their first trip to the Bangor Auditorium,” Foley explained of this year’s competition. “It can be an overwhelming experience, but it prepares them for performing at the varsity level and in front of a large crowd.”
