PRESQUE ISLE — The Presque Isle High School softball team is looking to improve on last year’s 3-12 record with eight returning starters.

Alan Curtis, entering his 10th year as coach, said even with the returning players the Wildcats are still young, with six freshmen on the 14-player roster.

The only senior to graduate from last year will be difficult to replace. Alecia Palmer played shortstop and led the team in most offensive categories. The team is also waiting for two of their players to be cleared medically to get back on the field.

Curtis projects seniors Courtney Colligan (pitcher/shortstop), Jessica Dumais (third base), Katie Patenaude (outfield/catcher) and Jessica Theriault (catcher) to get plenty of playing time. Theriault is awaiting a doctor’s approval to play. Also on the roster are juniors Laurin Ackerson (pitcher/outfield) and Karlee Bernier (outfield/second base); sophomores Carly Bell (outfield/pitcher), Logan Caron (outfield) and Kailey Shaw, awaiting medical clearance, (catcher/second base); and freshmen Kelsey Gilson (catcher/outfield), Emma Kinney, Megan Seward, Jordi Legassie, Kaily Ward and Macy Desmond, whose positions are to be determined.

Curtis said the keys to the season will be simple, “Our pitchers staying in the strike zone and being backed up by solid play in the field.”

The Wildcats began their season with a double-header in Hermon on Friday. Their first home game was yesterday against Houlton.
