Softball gets under way for local teams

    The high school regular softball season is under way, but most teams are still waiting to get in their first games.

Recapping the contests played through Monday:

    Central Aroostook 20, Ashland 7 — The Central Aroostook Panthers used a big first inning to win in their first game of the softball season at home against Ashland on Friday.

    Mars Hill scored 11 first-inning runs in support of Carly Grass, who tossed a four-hitter, striking out six.

    Vicki McIntyre led the Panthers with two singles and triple, driving in four runs. Michaela King also singled and drove in four runs.

    Kayla Cote and Kim Baker each had two singles for the Hornets.

    Hermon 6, Presque Isle 0 — At Hermon Friday, Abby Burgess fired a three-hitter with six strikeouts to lead the Hawks over the Presque Isle Wildcats.

    Katie Bernier, Liza Buck and Megan Seward hit singles for Presque Isle.

    Hermon 13, Presque Isle 1 — In the other game of the opening doubleheader Hermon scored early and often for a 13-1 win.

    Katie Patenaude singled twice with an RBI to pace Presque Isle
