PRESQUE ISLE — More than $1,200 has been raised for the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou thanks to nine volleyball teams that took part in the annual ‘Support Maine Veterans” Volleyball Tournament at Northern Maine Community College on Saturday.
FOR THE BLOCK — Frank Bemis of Presque Isle goes above the net to try to block a shot during the annual volleyball tournament at NMCC to benefit the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou. The tournament held on Saturday raised more than $1,200.
There were six teams, of six to eight players, which comprised the recreational bracket and three teams in the competitive division.
“The Student Senate sponsors this event each year to help raise money to support Maine veterans. It’s a chance for our students and community members to have fun while being physically active and raising money for a worthy community cause,” said Dennis Albert, NMCC student senate advisor. “This was a particularly exciting year, because we had one of our greatest turnouts yet. We all had a great time. Hopefully we’ll see a lot of these players return next year and be able to add even more teams to the mix.”
The participating teams were asked to raise at least $100 in order to enter the tournament. As of Monday $1,255, with more donations still coming in, was collected.
Winning the competitive bracket was the team Misfits, comprised of Austin Dufour, Danny Dufour, Billie Jo Sharpe, Jay Edgecomb, Doug Sharpe and Andrew Levesque.
Winning the recreational bracket was the NMCC Welding and Metal Fabrication team, which was comprised of some students in that program, with some key ‘friends’ of the college rounding out the team. Playing were: Erin Cote, Kayala Legassie, Trent Legassie, Dick Engels, Troy Cote, Frank Bemis and Don Zillman.
