Kovach, Small and Swan earn individual titles

BREWER – The Caribou Lady Vikings were the runners-up at Friday’s Penobscot Valley Conference Large School Track and Field Championships.

Caribou scored 89.3 points to finish behind Bangor, which dominated with 164.3 points, but ahead of seven other schools.

Old Town was third with 87, followed by Brewer with 70 and Mount Desert Island with 61. Hampden (38.3), Ellsworth (37), Hermon (28) and Presque Isle (13) also competed.

Leading the way for Caribou was Morgan Swan, whose distance of 33 feet, 9 inches in the shot put was good enough for first place. Swan was also fifth in the javelin (91 feet, 8 inches). Also earning an individual win was Paige Small, whose time in the 1,600-meter race walk was 8 minutes, 30.87 seconds.

Two relay teams for the Vikes placed second. The 4 X 800-meter relay team of Olivia Sleeper, Mackenzie Belyea, Sarah Doak and Sarah Plourde raced to a time of 9:57.99, while the 4 X 400-meter relay team consisting of Katie Plourde, Mackenzie Deveau, Doak and Sleeper came in at 4:22.88. Doak was the runner-up in the 1,600-meter run, posting a time of 5:34.25, while Sleeper was fourth in both the 400-meter dash (1:03.53) and the 200-meter dash (28.09).

Sam Murchison of Caribou took third in the javelin at 92 feet, 7 inches and fourth in the discus at 79 feet, 1 inch. Belyea ran to a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 (12:14.65), Katie Plourde was fourth in the 800 (2:32.76), Sarae Sager was fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.89) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (50.11) and Nerissa Larrabee fourth in the 1,600 (5:38.74) as the team’s other top point scorers on the afternoon.

In the boys’ competition, Bangor posted 134 points to defeat Hampden (113) and Brewer (89). The Vikings tallied 67 points on the day to take fourth, ahead of Presque Isle (48), Ellsworth (46), MDI (40), Old Town (34) and Hermon (18).

Josh Kovach of Caribou claimed his team’s lone individual win, finishing first in the 1,600-meter race walk with a time of 7:53.09. The Vikes had four others among the top six in the event, with Mitchell St.Peter taking second, Austin Griffeth third, Tyler Strid fifth and Colby Holdsworth sixth.

In the 110 hurdles, Brendan Wood of the Vikes placed second with a time of 17.46 seconds. He was also third in the triple jump (38 feet, 5.5 inches) and fifth in the 300 hurdles in 44.92 seconds to complete a fine all-around performance.

Nick Pucci of Caribou was second in the 200 in 24.74 seconds and Caleb Chapman turned in a third-place showing in the 3,200-meter run with a 10:16.5 clocking.

The Vikings’ top effort in relays came in the 4 X 800, as Chapman, Jesse Sandstrom, Taylor Thibodeau and Sean Barbosa teamed up for a time of 8:49.78, good for third place.

The Class B state meet will be held Saturday at Mount Desert Island High School  at 10 a.m.
