New trails, guided tours featured during special event

LIMESTONE — There’s a brand new trail at the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge in Limestone, and it will be one of four focal points of the annual Open House on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Friends of the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge— the site’s volunteer stewards — are holding the Open House in conjunction with National Refuge Week and have coordinated celebratory events.

Given the Limestone refuge’s unique military heritage, guided tours with retired military personnel who served on the former base will be available at both 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Self guided audio tours will also be available from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. for those who wish to travel at their own pace.

For families wishing to enjoy the autumn air, a family scavenger hunt will also be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., and the event concludes with the grand opening of the new Beaver Pond Trail at 2 p.m. with a bird walk and refreshments — the last scheduled activity of the day.

Aside from the scheduled events, the Friends of the Refuge will be on site to answer questions and provide information to hikers; the popular Nature Store will also be open to the public during this time.
