Commander receives honor

HOULTON, Maine — Brenda Commander, tribal chief for the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, received an award from the Maine Development Foundation’s Leadership Maine’s program, the Ken Curtis Award.
    Commander, a graduate of Leadership Maine, received her award Sept 21. Leadership Maine was created in 1993 by the Maine Development Foundation to broaden the pool of talented individuals in our state. The Kenneth M. Curtis Leadership Award is given annually to one exceptional Leadership Maine alumni who has given selflessly of themselves and epitomizes leadership in action in realizing extraordinary achievements.
The award is named for former Governor Kenneth M. Curtis who modeled the way in influencing change in the face of conflict. He served as the Deal of Leadership Maine in 1993, and has provided inspiration through his work. Past recipients include: Angus King, Jr. Kevin Gildart; Kent Wommack; Joyce Hedlund; Charles Morrison; Dianne Tilton; Mike Roy; Laurie Lachance; Steve Rowe: Ed Cormier; Jake Ward: Mark Johnston; Shannon Haines: Jim Conlon; Bob Peixotto, Dr. Dora Mills, and Cheryl Miller.
