Golfers wrap up year in state tournaments

    VASSALBORO — The team and individual state championships in golf were held the past two weekends at Natanis Golf Club, with several local golfers participating in both events.

    MARK CORELLA of the Ashland Hornets, sp-ashland golf-dc1-sh-37 competing in a match earlier this season, shot a 74 at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro Saturday to finish in a tie for second place at the Class C individual state golf tournament.

    On Oct. 6, the Presque Isle Wildcats competed in the Class B team tourney. The ’Cats had a score of 361 and placed seventh out of 13 teams. York was the winner with a 311, with Maranacook taking second with 324.

    Michael Boone paced PI by shooting an 87 on the day. Karson Eaton came in at 88 and Adam Flynn carded a 92. Josh Gordon followed with a 94 and Liam Hughes had a 98.

    In the Class C tournament, the Fort Fairfield Tigers placed seventh out of 11 teams with a score of 371 and the Central Aroostook Panthers were 10th with a 422. The winning team was St. Dominic with a 319, with Houlton the runner-up with 342.

    Robbie Watson shot an 85 to lead Fort Fairfield. Tyler Churchill had a 92, Noah Bernard a 96, Nate Guimond a 98 and Brandon Clark a 100 to round out the list of competitors.

    For CA, Alex Folsom had the low round with a 97. Chandler Brewer posted a 103, Zack Grass a 108, Kenny Bell a 114 and Zach McClung a 121.

    On Saturday, the individual tourney was held. Presque Isle’s Adam Flynn finished in a tie for 16th place among Class B golfers with an 87. Boone was 27th with a 95 and Gordon was 34th with a 119.

    Mark Corella of Ashland tied for the second lowest score in Class C by shooting a 74. He was six strokes behind champion Sam Grindle of Deer Isle-Stonington, who had a 68.

    FF’s Bernard improved his score from the previous weekend by 16 strokes by carding an 80 and finishing sixth in Class C. Watson shot an 82 to place 11th.

    Mark Chasse of Ashland had qualified, but was unable to compete due to a soccer injury suffered the previous day.

    For the girls, Presque Isle’s Jenna Hallett, coming off her victory in the Penobscot Valley Conference tourney, came in eighth overall with a 91. The Tigers’ Jordann Coiley posted a 109 to place 25th.
