On Monday, Oct. 15, author Tim Caverly spoke with the Washburn Elementary students. Tim spoke to students about the “story behind the story” in his book “Allagash Haunting.”

Author Tim Caverly served as guest speaker during a recent visit with Washburn Elementary students, discussing his book, “ Allagash Haunting.”
The Washburn Rotary Club generously donated a classroom set of his book “Allagash Haunting” to the Washburn Elementary School. Tim also joined the Washburn Rotary Club for supper and spoke with them about his book.
If you would like to learn more about Tim’s books, visit his website at www.allagashtails.com. You can also listen to a reading of his book on WHOU 100.1; they will be airing a reading on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m. and again on Halloween night, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. You can also listen online at www.whoufm.com.
Historical Society
The Salmon Brook Historical Society will hold their quarterly meeting Thursday, Nov. 1, at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center. The business meeting will follow the potluck supper. Bring a service setting and either a main dish, dessert or rolls.
The Salmon Brook Historical Society is also going to raffle off an unsold copy of “An Informal History of Washburn” by Ray Carter, copyright 1984. The book is out of print and has been unavailable for many years. The book was generously donated by a member of the Carter family to the Salmon Brook Historical Society for fundraiser purposes. The raffle will be to raise funds towards a new barn roof. The drawing will take place on Dec. 1, making it available to use as a possible Christmas present. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and will be available at the Washburn Rotary’s Hunters Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 27. For more information, call Rita Kingsbury at 455-9359 or Gary and Louise Cole at 455-4723 or by mail at Salmon Brook Historical Society, PO Box 71, Washburn, ME 04786

Student ambassador
Lucia Bragg, a 15-year-old sophomore at Washburn District High School, has been selected to become a People to People student ambassador. During the summer of 2013 she will be joining a group of same-aged students for a 19-day educational trip that will go through Ireland, Scotland and Wales. She will be able to interact with residents of those countries and have teachers to learn about the history and culture of each region. The trip will also include an opportunity to interact with a member of the British Parliament.
Lucia Bragg needs to raise $7,500 to pay her way towards this trip. She has been babysitting, walking dogs and reaching out to local businesses to raise money for her trip. She is available and willing to do those things for you and mow lawns or even write an essay on the topic of your choice.
In addition, Lucia will also be doing a bottle drive around Nov. 3 which is being supported by the Washburn Redemption Center, weather permitting. With thanks to the Washburn Trail Runners on Dec. 7 she will be having a stew night. She is also working on an alcohol-free New Year’s Eve party pending finding a DJ willing to donate time and arranging other donations for raffles and food.
As with many students right now, Lucia is extremely busy running her raffle, selling December decorations, soccer, JV and Varsity, and she is also manager for the track team. Lucia is also an honor student. If you would like to help her in raising funds or even sponsor her trip, you can call her at 455-8053 or e-mail cia.denise.bragg2015@live.com. Checks can be made payable to: People to People Ambassador Program, P.O. Box 34902, Seattle, WA 98124-1902. Please note “Bragg 10163471” if you mail a check directly. Contact Lucia if you have any further questions.
Hunters’ Breakfast
The Rotary Club of Washburn will be holding their annual Hunters’ Breakfast from 4:30-8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Trail Runners’ Clubhouse. There will be door prizes available. Meal tickets will be available at the door at the cost of $6 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.
A donation of $1 from each meal ticket sold will be given to the Hospice House of Comfort project.
Making a difference
Oct. 27 is Make a Difference Day. The Washburn quilting group Stitchin’ an’ a Givin’ will be making quilts on Oct. 26 to commemorate this day at the Trail Runners’ Clubhouse in Washburn. The group will be making quilts for Hospice of Aroostook. They will be having a potluck lunch along with items for coffee breaks. Anyone is welcome to come and help out; if you don’t sew you can help with cutting, pressing or tacking fabric. They will have fabric available for anyone who does not have their own, but quilts made from the fabric stash must be donated to Hospice. Please bring your own tools such as scissors, tacking needles or sewing machines. The Stitchin’ an’ a Givin’ group will be at the Trail Runners’ Clubhouse Friday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Even if you don’t sew or quilt, you are welcome to stop by and say ‘hello’ and see the work that will be going to Hospice of Aroostook.
