Houlton Rotary literacy project a model for others

To the editor:
I’d like to express my appreciation to the Houlton Rotary Club for their sponsorship of my books and program to the Houlton Elementary School. With their help I have given 67 programs to 2,297 students and there have been 1,567 “Allagash Tails” books provided to 91 Maine schools. I really enjoyed the kids in Houlton and can’t believe how fast the morning went.
Last week I spoke to 100 students at the Machias Elementary school and then to the Calais Rotary about our outreach efforts to students. During my talk I explained the success of the literacy project in Houlton and then described the distribution of books to students (if they answer a questions right). The Calais Club liked how it was handled and said they would like to sponsor my visit and books to the Calais Library, using the Houlton Rotary procedure as an example.
I am currently working with the Temple Theatre and WHOU to make the “Haunting” broadcast to schools and others. I think it would be great for the kids to be able to read the book and then listen to the play and compare the two works.
