Masonic elections — At the annual meeting of the St. Aldemar Commandery held on Thursday evening, the following officers were elected: Eminent Commander, W. S. Lewin; Generalissimo, O. L. Goodrich; Prelate, Amos Putnam; Secretary, C. A. McCanna; Treasurer, Warren Skillin.

Drug store affiliation — The S. L. White Drug Company has just become affiliated with United Wholesale Druggists, which with the Leggett and Owl chains, is a subsidiary of United Drug Company. In making this announcement, Mr. White added that the chief advantage of this affiliation lies in the buying power made available to his company.
Santa’s elves — Houlton Boy Scout troops, under the sponsorship of Houlton Rotary and Lions Clubs, plan to collect old toys from town residents to be repaired and turned over to various charitable organizations for distribution at Christmastime.

Plaid popularity — This week’s advertisement for Penney’s Department Store features a variety of plaid shirts for men and boys: hefty cotton flannel work shirts for $2 each; men’s holiday shirts, plain and fancy, $2 each; and boy’s cotton flannel shirts, $1 each.
Ricker fall festivities — Thanksgiving weekend was marked at Ricker College by the first annual “Potato Classic” and the annual fall conference of the board of trustees. Other “Fall Weekend” festivities included dances and fraternity parties with “The Continentals,” a popular Madawaska dance band, furnishing the music for Thursday’s Limbo Rock and Friday’s Fall Twist.

Holiday happenings —According to folks at the Houlton Chamber of Commerce, Saturday’s Holiday Parade drew a throng of area people to town. A crowd of about 200 gathered that evening in Monument Park for the Community Carol Sing and tree lighting. Ginny Urbanek acted as mistress of ceremonies, introducing Town Council Chairman Richard Hammond, who was the official tree lighter.

Gregory and Sara Douglas along with their children Steven and Susan are fourth and fifth generation family members who operate the athletic clothing and footwear outlet. With Sara, left, is Ruth Cumming, an employee of the store since 1947.
Local talent — Among the many acts to be presented for “New Year’s Eve Houlton,” are groups being organized by local musician Harry Roper including the Houlton Christmas Strings, students and parents learning to play Suzuki method violin, and the Houlton Baroque-in-the-Bush String Orchestra consisting of Claudette Gagnon, Harry and Marilyn Roper, Robin Mosenfelder, Joel Hutchins and a few children.
