Santerre Sno-Run still on

The ninth annual Andy Santerre Sno-Run is still a go, with a few last-minute changes in the works to accommodate for the lack of snow this year.
Despite last week’s record high temperature that passed 50 degrees on Thursday that depleted most if not all of the area’s snow cover, Santerre — along with several of his racing world friends — will be on hand Saturday

morning to kick off the event, sponsored by Aroostook Mental Health Center and serving as a fundraiser for sexual assault awareness services in Aroostook County.
“The ninth annual Andy Santerre Sno-Run fundraiser event to raise awareness and funds for child victims of sexual assault in Aroostook County will go on as planned Feb. 9,” said organizer Joe Chamberlain.
Due to trail and snow conditions, organizers will make a decision on Wednesday or Thursday about the snowmobile ride portion of the event.
“All other parts of the 2013 fundraiser, including the Sno-Run/Walk 5K will go forth as scheduled on Saturday morning, beginning at the Griffeth Ford dealership in Caribou, as well as all the scheduled afternoon and evening festivities,” he said.
Evening activities include a social/autograph session with Santerre and his friends from 4:30-6 p.m. at The Crow’s Nest Restaurant and Events Center in Presque Isle, followed by a buffet dinner and charity auction.
“We have approximately 150 lots for auction of anything and everything, ready to go to the highest bidder. We have everything from gas and grocery cards; gift certificates for fuel oil, pellets and restaurants; roses; jewelry; furniture; NASCAR race tickets and sheet metal; snowmobile helmets; jackets; an autographed Sprint Cup Champion Brad Keselowski 1/24th scale diecast car signed by Brad, along with his crew chief, Paul Wolf,” said Chamberlain.
Chamberlain said the weather’s cooperated for the past eight years; he expected sooner or later lack of snow would be an issue.
“We have had eight years of excellent trails and weather. We always hoped that this type of experience would not happen. But we have no control over the weather, so we will just have to think positive and make the best of it,” he said. “It is what it is.”
He’s optimistic that public support will continue this year, despite the lack of snow.
Santerre is planning to take part in Saturday’s activities, from beginning to end. If there’s not enough snow to ride, he plans to get his exercise, hitting the streets along with the runners and walkers.
“If we can’t ride, why not get some much-needed exercise and enjoy the day with all our friends,” continued Chamberlain.
Organizers wish to thank the numerous supportive sponsors who’ve contributed to this year’s fundraiser. For updates or more information, call 498-6431 or visit www.amhc.org.
