    PORTAGE LAKE – Dawn “Chyckie” Holmes, 56, died Feb. 27, 2013, at an Eagle Lake health care facility. She was born in Ashland, October 4, 1956, the daughter of Preston and Lois (MacLean) Holmes.
    She was a graduate of Ashland Community High School and received an associates degree in criminal justice from the University of Maine of Presque Isle. Dawn was a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed the outdoors and loved to kayak, cross-country ski and go on nature walks. Dawn spent the majority of her work career helping to run the Getty Granite Co. in Salem, CT. She enjoyed the beauty of stone work and was most invaluable and irreplaceable. She was not only an employee, but a very special friend to the Getty family.
    In addition to her mother of Ashland, Dawn is survived by one daughter, Erin Nielson of Uncasville, CT; one granddaughter, her little peanut, Aurealla Santiago; two brothers, James Holmes and his wife, Kathy, Preston Holmes III and his wife, Kim, all of Portage Lake. She was predeceased by her father in 2012.
    A funeral service was held at the Advent Christian Church on Saturday, March 2, with Rev. George McLaughlin officiating. Funeral arrangements are a service of Stimson-Ouellette Funeral Home, 114 Exchange St., Ashland.
