When a cat won’t use the litter box

There are some interesting articles and videos online via at the following link:  http://about.com/pets. You can learn so much about taking care of your pets, especially if you are a new cat owner. I found one article recently that explains different reasons why cats won’t use their litter box. I realize not all cat owners keep their cats inside, but here is what I found out for those that do.

The most important thing to remember is cats are particularly sensitive to smells and many times this is the reason for why a cat will suddenly stop using their litter box. To fix this problem, remember to always keep the kitty litter box away from the cat’s food and water supply area in the home because cats usually won’t relieve themselves in the same area as where they eat and drink.
The litter box should be cleaned out on a

daily basis to alleviate offensive smells that might cause your cat to go elsewhere in the home. If you have more than one cat, then you should provide more than one litter box.
If your cat is having a difficult time going to the litter box, or is in pain or crying a lot, always consult your local veterinarian immediately, because several medical problems can also be a reason why your cat will no longer use the litter box.
On another note, the Central Aroostook Humane Society would like to thank the Presque Isle Animal Hospital for volunteering to spay/neuter five shelter dogs and four shelter cats for free! It’s support like this that makes our animal shelter a success!
If you feel you are ready to adopt an animal, please stop by the Central Aroostook Humane Society on Cross Street to visit the animals.
If you are not ready to adopt, but would like to provide some love, please stop by to hold or play with the animals.
