The California Indians live in the west. The intermountain Indians lived in the Great Basin between California and the Rocky Mountains. The men wore loin cloths or no clothes in the summer. The women wore shirts and skirts made of fibers from bark, grass and sometimes deer skins. In the winter capes were worn that hung down to the skirts that both men and women wore. Men and women did not wear shoes, except in the snow.

They were scared of spirits of the dead. They burned the dead man’s house, body and belongings so the ghost could not use them.
The Indians wove baskets to carry water and the Pomo Tribe was the most skilled in weaving baskets. They were known for their beautiful baskets and used them for traps, tools, cradles, gifts and storage. Both men and women made them.
