The Iroquois Indians habitat is in the Northwest. It is very hot there. The Indians had lots of water. They built longhouses. They were long because there were lots of Indians. They came up with the name longhouse because they are long. The longhouses could hold 30 to 60 people. The longhouses were first built near streams. Later they were built on hilltops for protection from invading tribes.

NIE-Damien-dc-pt-13    The Iroquois Indians ate by growing their own corn. They also caught fish by nets and then let them bake in the sun or in a pot over a fire. The Iroquois Indians made fires by taking two sticks and rubbing them together for about one and a half hours. Sounds crazy, right? You might think their hands got tired, but that’s how they lived and that’s how they cooked stuff.
No Indians had electricity. They had no light bulbs and stuff like that. They had to cut a hole in the wall so light could shine through the window. At night time they had a little piece of wood that they would use to close the hole, so the bugs could not get in.
The Iroquois Indians wore deer and rabbit skin for clothing. They did not have fancy dresses and gowns and stuff like that. They had to kill the animals and then skin them and sew clothes. When they were done they cooked the animal over the fire.
They made scary masks and they wore them to frighten away the evil spirits. They made them out of clay and wood. They carved them with jack-knives. They did not have paint back then, so they used tree sap. They used quills for paint brushes. They made up games with wooden pieces.
The Iroquois Indians’ customs were many festivals. They had lots of fun. They had all of the Iroquois Indians come from all around the world.
