PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Teaching children about the great outdoors will be the focus once again of the Presque Isle Fish & Game Club’s Sportsman’s Show, to be held at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Gentile Hall this weekend. “The event is slated for Saturday, April 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, April 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” said event organizer Nick Archer, club member.
Archer said many of the exhibits and activities are geared for kids.
“We’ll have a moose-calling contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday, which will include something for the kids. We’re doing all sorts of activities and contests for the children to get things warmed up,” he said.
Many of the venues are designed to keep folks active, especially youth.
“We want to emphasize our new video hunting range, we have bow hunting, rock climbing, our fish pond is back. We’ll also be giving away fishing poles and two mountain bikes for kids 10 and under — register at the door for those,” Archer said.
In addition to the traditional exhibits — such as fly-tying booths and ATVs — Archer said he’s pleased to have some new entries as well.
“We have a lot of outdoor artwork, some really beautiful stuff,” said Archer. “We’ve got many of the same vendors but also a lot of new outdoor art, photography and paintings.”
He said there is a great deal of outdoor artwork that will be available for those interested in purchasing a piece or two.
Another exciting element this year will be the birds of prey.
“We have the birds of prey exhibit. Larry Barnes is a master falconer — hunts with birds, like eagles and hawks. He’ll be on hand for demonstrations and to provide more information about what he does,” said Archer.
For hungry participants, Riverside Restaurant will once again be serving lunch.
Archer said funds raised benefit youth interested in attending conservation camp.
“Money we raise, in part, goes toward scholarships for kids to attend conservation camp. They can register to attend the weekend of the show,” he said.
Archer said this is a great opportunity to see what’s available for folks of all ages to do outside, especially children.
“There’s a lot to do with kids. Entry to the event is $5 per person and free for those 10 and under,” said Archer. “We want to emphasize there are a lot of educational opportunities for kids interested in outdoor activities.”
In all, over 75 exhibitors will be on hand to explain the latest in their field of expertise. Hourly door prizes will be presented as well. This year’s big door prize is an Old Town canoe.
“We want to thank, in advance, all our great sponsors who make this annual event possible,” said Archer. “We’re looking forward to another great turnout. So be sure and bring the kids, they’ll have a great time and so will you.”
