• S. W. Collins & Son started a crew of ten men to Ashland on Tuesday after a drive of 250,000 cedar.
• Fred Goud, Ralph Hendrix and A. W. V. Pike visited Fort Fairfield Sunday afternoon on bicycles.
100 Years Ago-May 22, 1913
• Trotting park gets upgrade — Improvements that have been going on at the Fort Fairfield trotting park make the place look like a new one. There is much grading on the grounds and the back of the grand stand has been boarded and all will be painted. The judges’ stand has been moved and other good changes made. B. A. Flewelling has charge of this work. The best racing ever seen here is expected (July 4) with an automobile parade in the morning and a torchlight parade in the evening.
• Caribou area locals — Miss Odina Gardiner has accepted a position as teacher in Connor Plantation. Mr. and Mrs. John Estey of Presque Isle were in town yesterday. Miss Nina Lewis, who has been clerking in the Pattee Co.’s store during the absence of Miss Nan Young has resigned, with Miss Young returning to her former position.
75 Years Ago-May 26, 1938
• Caribou Fire Department assists in Lille — Flames destroyed the home, barn and shed of Donat Cyr, threatening the entire residential section of Lille before firemen from Van Buren, Caribou and Madawaska extinquished the blaze. The fire started in the upper story of the house after children had left a lighted oil lamp with which they had been playing.
• At the movies — The Paramount in Fort Fairfield is showing Walt Disney’s “first full length production, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Caribou’s Powers Theatre presents David O. Selznick’s “Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” Dorothy Lamour and Ray Milland in “Her Jungle Love,” and “Adventures of Robin Hood” with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland to be coming soon.
50 Years Ago-May 23, 1963
• League play underway — Team representatives in the Community Softball League voted to set Tuesday, May 28 as starting date for this year’s league play. This year’s season will open with 10 teams with the following being entered: Teachers, Pit Rats, Maine Public Service, Recreation Department, Jaycees, Mason Motors, Laplante’s Dairy, Anderson Beverage Company, Jets and Birds Eye.
• Countdown to Miss Caribou — The Caribou Chamber of Commerce has announced at least nine young women will compete in this year’s “Miss Caribou Pageant.” Among the contestants are: Junior Miss Caribou Sharon Dow, Miss USO Jackie Saucier, Key Club Princess Sharon Palmer, as well as, Betty Dudley, Jackie Gillingham, Letha Hedstrom, Joann Labrie, Sue Phelan and Sue Smith.

• Sen. Mitchell says Loring ‘secure’ — Despite the recent strategic role change at Loring Air Force Base, U.S. Sen. George J. Mitchell is calling the future of the nation’s eastern-most base “secure,” stating its strategic location “is as important today as it was 10 years ago.” Last week, Air Force officials said up to 300 security personnel will be transferred from Loring because less security is required for a conventional or non-nuclear mission.
• Turtles walkers sponsor race — The Aroostook Turtles Walking Club is sponsoring a two-mile walking race from Caribou High School to the Irving Station and back, Sunday, May 29. Registration fee is $6 with a t-shirt and refreshments provided to all.
