STOCKHOLM – Mary Emmeline Clark Gregory, 95, died May 17, 2013 at her Stockholm residence. She was born in Caribou, January 29, 1918, the daughter of Delbert and Bessie (Mills) Clark.
She grew up on Green Ridge at the family farm. She entertained her family with memories of roaming the neighborhood on her pony named Dixie and helping her father with the potato harvest with horse-drawn equipment. Having grown up in the depression, she was always mindful of stocking up on food supplies as an adult and always had a huge supply of canned goods stored away. She was better than a store if anyone ran out of anything!
She graduated from Caribou High School in 1935 and married Philip Gregory in 1949. They lived on the Presque Isle Road in Caribou and raised four children, spending summers and holidays at Madawaska Lake. She helped Phil with the family business, Aroostook Petroleum Products, by doing some of the bookkeeping and payroll. In their retirement, they made their cottage at Madawaska Lake their permanent home.
Emmeline was very active. She loved to take walks on the camp road and was known for her long stride. She also enjoyed cross country skiing on the “Island Trail” with friends. She was proud of her flower gardens and was active in clubs and social groups in the community. She was always the one various family members kept in touch with and was the perfect listener when you needed someone to talk to. She was loved by her children and then her grandchildren for her wonderful cooking, especially her pancakes. Emmeline was forever young at heart, never looked her age and stayed active into her 90’s. Friends loved her for her sense of humor and her easy going personality. She made her home with her daughter in Stockholm for the last 12 years and attended the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Emmeline was predeceased by her husband, Phillip, in 1991; her son Peter in 1989, and her son David in 2001; three brothers, Percy, Ray and Colby Clark, and two sisters, Marion Harmon and Norma Brewer. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Currier and her son-in-law and caregiver, Chris Currier of Stockholm; her son, Jeffrey Gregory of Naples; her sister-in-law, Elaine Gregory of Belfast; grandchildren, Lauren Currier of Caribou, Russell Currier of Stockholm, Ashley Parker of Lyman, Melissa McKersie, Stephanie Doughty of Portland, James and Cathy Gregory of Casco, Kelley Stevens and Stacy Bartlett of Minot and daughter-in-law Lori Gregory of Florida; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Linda Callison of Stockholm.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in June. The date and time will be announced by Mockler Funeral Home, Caribou. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Mrs. Gregory may do so through Hospice of Aroostook or the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging. www.mocklerfuneral home.com.
