The Masonic Association of Ashland will be sponsoring its third annual Model Car Race during the 2013 Ashland Summer Fest celebration.

The event is open to participants of all ages, male or female, and will take place Wednesday, July 3 at the Ashland Recreation Center. The race features Boy Scouts of America (BSA) pinewood derby car kits racing down a 32-foot wooden track. These races are super fun to watch and participate in.
Registration is $15 per entry which includes the car kit. Cub Scouts may register for $10 using their 2013 pinewood derby car. Cash prizes of $50, $25 and $15 will be awarded to winners of this double elimination race. A gift certificate for a two-item pizza will be awarded to the “Best in Show” as chosen by the public.
Car kits, race rules and registration forms are now available and can be purchased from Chris Bessey (435-2023) and Dave Basely (435-3601).

Ashland students go international

Students from the construction, drafting and welding class at Ashland District School got a firsthand experience not only in bridge construction but also in international protocol when dealing with two countries as they recently toured the construction site of the International Bridge that connects Fort Kent with Clair, New Brunswick.
They first experienced part of the construction phase last Oct. 26 when the American contractor had just begun the abutment section. They could see the progression of each phase from one side of the river to the opposite side. The Canadian abutment was completed along with one of the piers. The Reed & Reed contractors worked the U.S. side, while the Caldwell & Ross, Co. of Fredericton, New Brunswick managed the rest of the sections.
Students were advised to follow the company’s safety procedures prior to boarding the steel structure. This venture required planning with the U.S. and Canadian Customs, as well as the general contractor in order to provide the best possible experience for the young adults. Everyone received firsthand knowledge from the contractor’s managed plan in order to work on a high-risk structure. Also, everyone is required to wear the proper personal protective equipment.
