CARIBOU — On Saturday, Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Caribou Historical Society Center and Museum, located on U.S. Route 1 in Caribou, will be dedicating their new barn and the Harriet Cousins Nature Trail located behind the center’s premises.
The 40-foot by 60-foot barn was constructed in October of 2010 to house larger pieces of farm equipment acquired by the Society, especially the covered wagon that was drawn by teams of horses from Boston to Caribou in time for the opening of the city’s 1959 centennial celebration.
Work began in 2006 to make use of the wooded land behind the center and form the Harriet Cousins Nature Trail. The trail was named after the late Cousins for her dedicated work with the society.
There are actually four trails located behind the south entrance that offer the opportunity to observe plant and wildlife and make use of benches and picnic areas to relax and take in the sights. A footbridge was constructed over a rippling brook that allows hikers the chance to explore two trails farther back on the property.
The dedication ceremony will include a free light lunch, live musical entertainment, games for kids and door prizes. All are welcome to join in the festivities.
The Caribou Historical Society is open on Saturdays from noon until 4 p.m. The society is always looking for new members. Membership business meetings are held at 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month. For more information, call 498-2556.
