Larrabee, Kinney lead Vikes at meet

    OUT IN FRONT — From left, Adessa Judd of Caribou, Sarae Greenier of Union 122 and Isabelle Jackson of Presque Isle were the frontrunners at the Aroostook League middle school cross country championships, held Oct. 2 at UM-Presque Isle.

    BELFAST — The largest cross country meet in the state, the Maine XC Festival of Champions, was held Saturday, with Aroostook squads Caribou, Presque Isle and Washburn all making the trip down to compete.
    The top effort of the day turned in among local runners belonged to Washburn senior Carsyn Koch in the girls’ race. Amongst 623 females to finish the five-kilometer course, Koch placed sixth overall in 19 minutes and 15.15 seconds.

    The winning time belonged to Bonny Eagle sophomore Kialeigh Marston, who finished in 18:42.94.
    Washburn placed ninth out of 51 teams by scoring 402 points. Beaver senior Carmen Bragg was 92nd in 21:28.58 and junior Mackenzie Worcester 98th in 21:33.52.
    Mount Desert Island won the meet with 95 points, followed by Falmouth (181) and Harwood Union of Vermont (232). The girls’ meet featured 51 teams from throughout the state, with a few coming from other regions of New England as well.
    Leading Caribou, which placed 29th in the team results by posting 742 points, was junior Nerissa Larrabee, who was 66th in the race in 21:02.14. Her twin sister Robyn was 136th in 22:04.79.
    In the boys’ race, Caribou senior Lucas Kinney led the contingent from Aroostook County by ending up 112th overall in 18:02.85.
    Caribou was 32nd with 942 points. After Kinney, the Vikings’ best time was recorded by freshman Kyle Morris. He came in at 18:47.2 and placed 210th overall. Teammate Elijah Verhoff, a sophomore, was 243rd in 19:01.25.
    The Washburn boys were 53rd with 1,520 points. Junior Alex Pelletier led the way by finishing in 19:10.6 and was 265th overall..
    The next competition for Washburn will be a home meet this afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m. and including fellow County schools Limestone-MSSM, Fort Kent and GHCA. On Friday, the Caribou and Presque Isle teams are scheduled to travel to Hermon for the Pendale Invitational.
