Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Aug. 12 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speakers were Aroostook County Chief Deputy Sheriff Darrell Crandall and Sergeant Ross McQuade. They spoke about the Aroostook County Crime Stoppers Organization, established in 1987. It is the only Crime Stoppers organization in the state of Maine.
It is made up of three parts: A civilian board of directors sets policy, coordinates fund-raising efforts, formulates a system of awards and approves awards; the Sheriff’s Office has a deputy assigned part-time to the organization who receives and documents tips, assigns those tips to the appropriate investigating agency for followup, identifies crimes to he publicized on TV and acts as a liaison between the media, public and the board; and the media who helps publicize Crimes of the Month on TV. There is also a Facebook page set up.
Since 1987, there have been 487 arrests made from tips received at the Crime Stoppers’ phone number. There has also been $1,137,377 worth of stolen property recovered, $8,813,000 worth of drugs seized and $66,845 in awards given.
