Writer, newspaper espouse racist views
To the editor:
I am writing in response to Steve Martin’s letter entitled “Forced diversity in The County”. I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion, but what is the point of the newspaper publishing a letter that so blatantly exposes the readers to one man’s callous hate of the largest country in the world.
This year each of these so called “wealthy communist apparatchiks” are paying $9,000ish in tuition to expose their children to our American ways at Presque Isle High School. I sure hope they don’t go home with what Steve has to teach them. I am hopeful that these students will learn about our freedoms as Americans, try some new activities, develop critical thinking and communication skills, for which U.S. schools are known, and feel respected as human beings. It sure can’t be a bad thing to send residents of any communist country home with some Made in America ideas, excluding those made in Amity by Steve.
I am here as a member of a Chinese-American family to stand up and be counted as a member of the “grass roots of Aroostook County” who support this multicultural initiative.
To Steve, I say, even though you say that you are only afraid of communists, and them having a negative influence on our students ideologically, your tone is racist, and I am hardly a whining liberal. To The Star-Herald, you don’t need to publish garbage like that just because someone writes it. Find something better to put in the newspaper or you are likely to lose the readers you have.
