HOWLAND, Maine — The Caribou varsity wrestling team made the trip to Penobscot Valley High School Saturday to compete in the annual PVHS Christmas Tournament.
The Vikings finished sixth out 23 teams entered. Foxcroft Academy won with 191.5 points and Dexter was the runner-up with 147.5. Ellsworth (96), Bucksport (86) and PVHS (64) were next, with Caribou following with 50 points.

“We were defending champions from last year but with three wrestlers out of the lineup with injuries and the with three of the top wrestling teams in the state involved, it made the going tough,” said Caribou coach Chico Hernandez. “I just told the team to have fun and surprise me, which they did again.”
The Vikes had three silver medal performances, turned in by Evan Michaud in the 106-lb. division, Eric Simon in 160 and Dustin DeMerchant in 195.
Michaud pinned Foxcroft’s Esau Olsen in the semifinals before losing by injury default to John Bapst’s Jacob Emery.
Simon, a sophomore captain, pinned Dan Morren of Ellsworth in the quarterfinals and Chris Storer of Foxcroft Academy in the semis before being defeated in the finals by Matt Stewart of Bucksport.
“Eric has started to come around and he is wrestling the best he has in his high school career,” said Hernandez.
Junior captain DeMerchant was beaten in the finals by Foxcroft’s Brandon Brock by pin.
Freshman Cory Jandreau in 120, Alton Pelletier in 170 and Brady Anderson and Jarred Jordan, both in 285, also competed for the Vikes.
