The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team is now 11-11 on the season after sweeping Fisher College in a doubleheader Sunday in Boston.
The Owls won game one, 7-6, and followed that up with a 3-2 victory in the second contest.
UMPI needed extra innings to wrestle the first game from the Falcons, as freshman Carly Bell came up with the clutch hit to knock in the eventual winning run.
With the game tied at 4-4, Jessica Campbell and Amanda Allen were in scoring position and Campbell scored on a hard hit by Ashley Dube that the Falcon second baseman fumbled. Bell next singled to center scoring Allen and Dube to give the Owls a 7-4 lead.
The Falcons mounted a comeback by scoring two runs of their own in the final frame, but freshman hurler Sara Packard struck out two Falcons to squash the rally. Packard struck out 12 Falcons with no walks in game one, setting a career high for strikeouts.
In the second game, Packard gave up seven hits in her seven innings of work for another pitching victory, while classmate Bell continued her hot hitting by going 2 for 4. Campbell went 2 for 3 to cement the sweep of the doubleheader for the Owls.
UMPI managed only six hits in a doubleheader against UM-Farmington Saturday, dropping both games by scores of 8-0 and 7-1.
Courtney Fowler controlled the Owl offense in game one, allowing only three hits in a six-inning shutout victory for the Beavers.
Bell, Katie Patenaude and Dube had the hits for the Owls. UMPI errors did not help the cause as Packard gave up only four earned runs in her 5-plus innings of work, with the rest of the runs scoring as the result of three infield errors.
Emily Vitone hurled a three-hitter for the Beavers in game two to give them the sweep.
UMPI plated its lone run in the fourth inning as freshman Nicole Marucci walked and scored on a Dani Smith groundout. That made it 2-1, but UMF scored three times in the bottom of the inning and went on to the triumph.
Marucci had two hits and Smith singled for UMPI.
The Owls’ scheduled game against Gordon College Monday was postponed due to rain.
