100 Years Ago- May 5, 1915

Van Buren bridge opened — The culmination of the last official act of President Taft when he signed the bill to construct an international railway bridge between Van Buren, Maine and St. Leonard, New Brunswick, took place Saturday when, with fitting formalities, it was officially opened for traffic.

Springtime snow — Many people were out driving in sleighs Sunday as eight inches of snow fell in this town (New Limerick) Saturday night. The baseball game called for Saturday in which the A. C. I. team from Mars Hill was to played R. C. I. in the forenoon had to be called on account of the heavy fall of snow.

75 Years Ago- May 2, 1940

First to plant — Duncan Woodworth, who annually has the distinction of planting the first plot of potatoes in this vicinity, wins the honor again. Woodworth and his son put in almost an acre of cobblers on Monday at their farm on the North road.
Big lumber drive — Roland Seamans of Cary brought down a drive of between 90,000 and 100,000 feet of lumber for Wilbur Harding, destined for barrels to be made in Mr. Harding’s factory. The drive was held up a day or two to allow men to retrieve machinery from the stream where the old mill was toppled in recent high water.

Bowling: All in the family — Bowling is without doubt the most popular participation sport in the area; and a family sport. Bowling families have had great success this season. Wendell Guy, his wife Pat and their daughter Wendy are leaders in the league. Ken Paradis is a league leader at the Dux, Bowling Center and Hillton, while his daughters Beverly, Diana and Janet have earned trophies in the girls’ leagues.

Adams: A golfing career — Terry Adams, formerly of Houlton, has accepted the position of Head Golf Professional at the Presque Isle Country Club for this season. Adams is a 1984 graduate of Houlton High School.
A mother’s wisdom — Here’s a tip from Gloria Winslow, mother of eight boys. If you live near a wooded area, have your small children wear a whistle around their neck. If they wander into the woods and can’t find their way back, the shrill whistle noise is easier to hear than a voice.

NEW OWNER OF BITHER’S — Mrs. Herschel McIntosh, well known for her work in the Order of Eastern Star and the Girl Scouts, has purchased Bither’s Ladies Apparel Shop at the corner of Main and Broadway.
