100 Years Ago – August 25, 1915
A curiosity — Willard Weston, one of Houlton’s prominent farmers, brought into the Times office some of the contents of a cow’s stomach which he recently killed. There was in all about four ounces of metal, consisting of an ear to an old pail, nails, tacks, short pieces of wire and a stone weighing one and a half ounces. The animal was taken lame in June and he attributed it to rheumatism, and one morning she refused to get up so he had to kill her.

A nuisance — Persons hauling mill wood, old boards and shingles over the streets of our town are sometimes careless about loading so that a trail of droppings are often made which is injurious to horses and inconvenient to other travel. Anyone who sees this may inform the selectmen who will take necessary steps.
75 Years Ago – August 22, 1940
Teachers named — Roderick L. Smith of Turners Falls, Massachusetts is to be head of the department of physical education, coach of basketball and track, assistant coach of football, and director of the boys’ dormitory. Miss Ruth Trickey of Pittsfield will teach English in the secondary department and music, have charge of the Glee Club, and assist in dramatics. Curtis H. Moore of Grinnell, Iowa, will teach contemporary civilization, economics, accounting, marketing, and business law in the Business Administration course of the Junior College.
Won Women’s Shooting — Mrs. Russell S. Wiley of Monticello was the victor of the rifle shoot at the Monticello Fish and Game Club’s field day with a score of 49 out of a possible 50.
50 Years Ago – August 19, 1965
Feeding by the hundreds — For seven weeks this summer, nearly two dozen women have been learning the fine art of preparing meals for a school lunch program. The special course has been conducted in the new cafeteria of the junior-senior high school in Houlton, and has been attended by women who will be working in Houlton, Island Falls, Crystal, and at Ricker.
Pay raise for Congress — It was only last year that a spending Congress decided to spend some of the taxpayers’ money on Congressmen themselves. The legislators gave themselves a whopping one-third boost in pay from $22,500 to $30,00 a year.
25 Years Ago – August 22, 1990
Brennan: “Elect me” — A proposal advanced last week by gubernatorial candidate Joseph Brennan to create seven new state parks, including one in Houlton, is just that — a proposal — according to a Brennan campaign aide.
Ames penalized — According to the U.S. Consumer Protection Commission, one Ames store sold banned lawn darts to an agency investigator posing as a consumer in March of 1989. The sale of lawn darts was banned by CPSC in December 1988, because of the skull puncture injuries and deaths the darts have caused and the continuing risks they pose, especially to children.
