The girls soccer season has featured plenty of exciting action as all area high schools played countable games this past week.
Houlton (1-0) opened its season with an impressive win over previously unbeaten Madawaska (see accompanying story), while Katahdin (1-0) and Hodgdon (1-0) also opened the season with victories. SACS (0-2-1) and East Grand (0-1) played competitively, but both squads are still searching for that elusive first win on the year.
The following is a recap of games played through Monday, Sept. 7.
Katahdin 1, SACS 0 — At Stacyville Sept. 1, Katahdin freshman Erin Lake scored with 14:43 to play, giving the host Cougars a 1-0 victory over Southern Aroostook.
“This was KMHS’ first game of the season and Katahdin’s first win since the team reassembled in 2012 after two years of not having a team,” said Cougar coach Lisa Timberlake. “This was a complete team effort from KMHS to earn this win.”
Playing strong offensively for Katahdin was Bailee Moody Kay, while Rylee Fitzpatrick had a strong game defensively for the hosts.
Courtney Stevens had 14 saves out of 14 shots for Katahdin, while SACS’ Marissa Boulier had 22 saves on 23 shots.
Hodgdon 5, Van Buren 1 — At Van Buren Sept. 2, Jill Gough provided two goals and an assist to lead the Hawks to victory. Madison Merritt and Sara Hutchinson scored a goal each for Hodgdon and Sydney Howell contributed an assist.
Lindsey Gendreau scored for Van Buren.
Fort Fairfield 7, Southern Aroostook 0 — At Dyer Brook Friday, the Warriors were shut out for the second straight game. The visiting Tigers of Fort Fairfield scored five first-half goals en route to the victory.
For the Tigers, Chelsey Pelkey had three goals; Alexis Coiley added two goals and two assists; and Taylor Churchill and Kailanny Hernandez each had a goal and an assist; Morgan Towle also notched an assist.
SACS keepers Marissa Boulier and Alexa Merry combined to stop seven of 14 shots. Fort Fairfield’s goalie stats were not reported.
East Grand 1, Shead 3 — At Eastport Friday, the Vikings were unable to keep pace with the host Tigers. Jennifer Crone scored the lone goal for East Grand.
For Shead, Cierra Seeley, Brooke Robinson and Taylah Kilby each scored a goal. Holly Preston chipped in with two assists.
Shead’s Samantha Wilder had six saves on seven shots, while East Grands Bethany Lindsey had 10 saves on 15 shots.
