PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The UMPI softball and baseball teams have returned from their spring break trips, which saw an abbreviated schedule of games played due to poor weather and field conditions.
The softball team went 2-6 during the week and is now 5-7 overall heading into the Friday, April 7 doubleheader against New England College in Henniker, N.H.
Coach Sara Shaw’s squad split a doubleheader with Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Va. Thursday. The Owls took the opener, 10-8, behind Nicole Marucci’s grand slam home run in the third inning. Sara Packard and Delanie Strout delivered run-scoring singles in the victory, which saw UMPI total 18 hits. Strout and Jordi Legassie both went 3 for 4 for the winners.
The Owls lost game two, 7-5, despite two hits each from Emma Gogan and Esmeralda Galvan.
On Sunday, UMPI was swept by Husson University in Bangor by scores of 9-0 and 7-0. Ariel Williams had two hits for the Owls in the opener, while Jackie Peers and Brianna Losee each had one in the game 2 loss.
UMPI’s scheduled doubleheaders against Carlow (March 27), Franciscan (March 31) and Southern Maine Community College (April 2) were all cancelled due to the weather.
The Owls’ baseball team was limited to three of a scheduled nine games. UMPI prevailed in one of those contests, topping Norwich University in the second game of a doubleheader played March 26.
After losing the opener, 5-4, the Owls took the nightcap, 9-5, in a game that took 10 innings before being decided. In the win, Matt Cauchon’s two-run single capped a four-run rally in the 10th that gave UMPI the win. Justin Mason and Angel Morales also had RBIs in the inning.
Martin Egan had an RBI single in the first inning to open the Owls’ scoring and Ryan Sanderson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third. Saul Nunez picked up the pitching victory.
UMPI lost to Community College of New York March 29, 11-7, in its only other action during the trip. Sanderson went 3 for 4 in the loss.
Games against St. Joseph’s of Brooklyn, Vaughn, Valley Forge and SMCC were all scratched due to the weather. Coach Mike Pankow’s UMPI squad brings a 2-16 overall record into an April 8 twinbill at Staten Island.
