FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Fort Fairfield Athletic Boosters Club holds its Memorial Day Golf Scramble every year in memory of a community member who impacted athletics in the town. This year, Ruel Flannery will be honored at the 20th annual event.

Flannery, who passed away this past year, was “an outstanding, dedicated community leader and an avid sports fan whose contributions to the school system and student-athletes over the years have been a positive influence in the lives of those he touched,” according to boosters club president Larry Gardner.

This year’s tournament will take place on Saturday, May 27, at Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield. This will be a four-person scramble format with a shotgun start at noon. Registration will be from 11 to 11:45 a.m.

The field is limited to the first 40 teams. Entry fee is $65 per person and includes a steak or chicken barbecue. There will be a men’s division, a women’s division and a mixed division consisting of two men and two women. Over $5,000 in prizes will be awarded to the top ten net teams and top four gross teams.

Golfers will have a chance to win a 2017 Ford Focus, supplied by Griffeth Ford of Caribou and Presque Isle, for a hole-in-one on hole No. 4. In addition golfers will have a chance to win $10,000 cash provided by the Par & Grill in Caribou for a hole-in-one on hole No. 15. In the 19-year history of the event, two cars have been won.

Closest to the pin, longest drive and other contests also will be held. A steak and chicken barbecue will be included with the entry fee. Many items also will be auctioned off with all proceeds of this tournament going to the Fort Fairfield Athletic Boosters Club in their continued support of athletics at Fort Fairfield Middle/High School.

“This tournament has grown tremendously since our first year,” Gardner said. “The field fills up quickly because all of our sponsors really do a great job for us in donating money and prizes, which help make this such a popular event.”
