FORT KENT, Maine — Basketball players from 14 County high-schools will compete with one another for two full days of tournament action during the third annual University of Maine at Fort Kent Summer Classic this weekend.
The games will begin on Friday and wrap up Saturday and will be played at the UMFK Sport Center and the Fort Kent Community High School gymnasium.
“This is a chance for the kids to play together in the off season, trying to build up to their winter season. Some teams are rebuilding and some teams are on the rise, so it’s always interesting to see how the different teams shape up,” said organizer and UMFK men’s basketball Coach Tom Bird. “This tournament has teams from all over, so it gives them each a chance to play teams that they normally wouldn’t face in their regular seasons.”
This year’s Summer Classic will include 5 girls’ teams and 9 boys’ teams for a total of nearly 150 participants. The students also will tour UMFK during a tournament break.
“You might see many potential Bengal students on campus (this) weekend,” Bird said.
Admission to the tournament per day is $4 for adults, $2 for students/seniors and free for kids age 5 and under.
Proceeds from the tournament will help support the UMFK men’s basketball program.
Bird said this year’s Summer Classic has more than 20 sponsors.
