Location brings better business for JEI

HOULTON, Maine — A new location has translated into a business boost at JEI Sports of Maine.

Owner Blaine Jackett said last week that since moving to 60 Main St., the graphic design business has had a nice uptick in walk-in traffic.

“Over here, I’ve just got these two display windows,” he explained. “But I’ve got more people coming in to check out what I’ve got and then they’re making purchases.”

JEI moved to the Main Street shop, formerly home to Uncle Willy’s Candy Shoppe (and also known as the old S.L. White Drug Co. building) after operating on the other side of Main Street, in the old Netherland Office Products building. That building has since been purchased by the Salvation Army to house their retail store.

So, moving a household is crazy enough. What’s it like moving an entire business?

“Well, I do have a lot of big equipment we had to move,” admitted Jackett, who said he had some help moving all  his inventory and equipment this spring. “Tony Casey and the Bethel Youth Worship Band from over in Oakfield helped us a lot one night. They came and we just made an assembly line and moved a ton over.”

Since the big move this spring, Jackett appears to have settled in nicely to his new business home.

“You know, I do like it here,” he said. “It doesn’t have as much room for display, but it’s a nice building that has a historic feel and a more up-to-date interior.”

He said parking is still tough for businesses like his on Main Street, but he feels optimistic, especially with recent news about a new cafe coming to downtown.

As far as his own business goes, he’s hoping to spread the word about all the different services he offers.

“I’d love to get the word out more about what I can do with laser engravings for trophies and awards,” he added. “I’m also doing vehicle vinyl and decals for storefront signage.”

Jackett added that he does have a dedicated garage space for the vehicle vinyl.

While he still has plenty of ideas for his business future, Jackett said he’s excited to welcome customers at new his space.

“I’m happy to have a downtown presence,” he added.
