CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Public Library has joined the International Postcard Exchange program coordinated by Liz Gotauco, teen services coordinator at the Cumberland Public Library in Rhode Island.
Participating students from the Caribou Public Library and the Ribston Hall Libraries in Gloucester in the United Kingdom will exchange postcards. The program targets teens ages 11-18, but may include students as young as 10 and as old as 19, and will run until Aug. 31.
Anastasia Weigle, Caribou library director, suggested students write about a favorite book or something special about the library, their school or the community. Students can even write about the kind of music, movies or games they enjoy or what they hope to do during the summer.
The program drew interest spanning six continents: United States, United Kingdom, Serbia, Belgium, Australia, Ireland, Peru, Nigeria, and Kenya. There are three libraries participating in the United States: the Caribou Public Library in Maine; Cumberland Public Library, Rhode Island; and Great Neck Public Library, New York.
“We’re happy that we can participate in this program, as it offers our teens an opportunity to practice writing skills as well as see and learn about different places,” Weigle said.
Caribou students interested in participating can stop by the library to fill out their postcards and then return them back to the library director, who will electronically send their postcards to the UK.
