Fair cooking winners announced

HOULTON, Maine — Budding cooks showcased some impressive culinary skills during the four-day Houlton Agricultural Fair.

According to Jody Wellington, chairman of the fair cooking contests, a large number of individuals participated in the many culinary contests the fair offered.

A new contest based on the cooking show “Chopped” drew great interest from the public, she said, and will likely become a staple of the fair. “Chopped” is a television show where cooks must come up with a dish based on the ingredients they are presented.

The following is a recap of the winners for 2017:

Chopped Junior (kielbasa, powdered doughnuts, broccoli and dill pickles) — 1, Olivia Cyr; 2, Aidan Jackman; 3, Amelia McAtee.

Chopped Adult 1 (kielbasa, powdered doughnuts, broccoli and dill pickles) — 1, Brooklyn Brown; 2, Jeff Bouchard; 3, Heather Cameron.

Chopped Adult 2 (chicken thighs, chocolate sauce, spinach, crescent rolls) — 1, Pam Perkins; 2, Stacey Mullen; 3, Becky MacIlroy.

Kids Cookie — 1, Lydia Byron; 2, Allison Worthley; and 3, Amelia Callnan.

State of Maine Blueberry Pie — 1, Sarah Harrison; 2, Angelina Jackman; and 3, Brooklyn Brown. Harrison and Jackman will represent the Houlton Fair at the state pie competition as part of the Fall Festival in Bangor.

State of Maine Apple Pie — 1, Mim Sloat; 2, Becky MacIlroy; and 3, Sarah Harrison. Sloat and MacIlroy will represent the Houlton Fair at the state pie competition as part of the Fall Festival in Bangor.

Best Watermelon/Strawberry dish — 1, Sarah Harrison; and 2, Brooklyn Brown.
