NMG selects Bossie as Mentor of the Year

EAGLE LAKE, Maine — Northern Maine General has announced Angela Bossie as the nonprofit organization’s 2017 Direct Support Professional Mentor of the Year.

Bossie has been a DSP for over 27 years. She began working for NMG’s Waiver Home Division in 1989 and more recently returned to that program six years ago. She primarily works in the Marcoux Home and Day Program.

Direct support professionals in NMG’s Home and Community Supports program assist adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in living life to their fullest potential. They teach individuals the skills needed to participate in their community as independently as possible such as daily living skills, money management, administering medications and learning and engaging in appropriate social skills.

According to Bossie’s colleagues, she “leads by example and initiates teamwork” and “helps co-workers be part of the solution.” Others said that she “treats everyone with respect” and “makes everyone around her have a positive attitude.”

In honor of National Direct Support Professionals Week, September 10 through 16, NMG’s Home and Community Supports program asked employees to nominate fellow DSPs whom they respect and appreciate and from whom they have learned. NMG defines a DSP mentor as someone who has a desire and aptitude for helping co-workers, is respectful to and listens to all people, helps find solutions to problems and creates opportunities for learning.

Northern Maine General is a nonprofit social service organization serving individuals throughout Aroostook County from locations in Eagle Lake and Caribou. NMG provides services such as targeted case management, behavioral health, assisted living and long term care.
