Houlton Elks Support Children in Crisis

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Lodge of Elks, part of one of the premier community organizations in the country, recently donated $1,000 toward the establishment of the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) for Aroostook County in Fort Fairfield.

According to Mike Hannigan, project manager for the Elks, the CAC is a child focused facility that operates with a multi-disciplinary approach to coordinate the investigation, prosecution, and treatment of children where there is a suspicion or disclosure of sexual abuse.

The CAC is a neutral environment that promotes healing for your child and family and will aid families with being connected with different resources throughout the community. Moreover, the child will only be exposed and questioned in one interview as opposed to multiple interviews, which only creates anxiety for the child. The child no longer has to relive the trauma they’ve experienced over and over again.

With the opening of the CAC the community members will no longer have to travel hundreds of miles to be seen at another CAC located in the state. The closest one just opened in Bangor.
