STEPHEN HAROLD MCQUARRIE, GLENBURN – Stephen Harold McQuarrie, 70, died peacefully, November 23, 2017, at home surrounded by his family. He was born June 27, 1947, in Houlton, the son of Clifford Parker and Helen Marie (McLaughlin) McQuarrie.
A graduate of Houlton High School, Class of 1965, he served in the United States Air Force. Following his service, he went on to a career with the phone company from which he retired in in 1996. A dedicated member of his community, Steve served on the Hodgdon School Board, and dispatched for the Houlton Police Department. However, it was in the fire service that Steve was most proud to serve his neighbors with a career of more than 20 years. A founding member of the Hodgdon Fire Department, he began as Safety Officer and rose to the rank of Assistant Chief. After moving to Glenburn, he joined the Glenburn Fire Department and continued his training with several terms at the National Fire Academy in Pennsylvania. In Glenburn, he was steadily promoted until he was named Fire Chief. He retired as chief and, at the time of death, was Assistant Chief of Glenburn Fire Department. In addition to his life of public service, Stephen enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at his camp in Haynesville Woods.
Stephen was predeceased by his brother, Thomas McQuarrie. He is survived by his wife, Linda Henderson McQuarrie of Bangor; son, Jonathan McQuarrie and partner, Tessa Flannery of Houlton; daughter, Sarah McQuarrie and husband, Ronald Sherwin of Plymouth, MA; stepdaughter, Kara Gamertsfelder of Noblesville, IN; brother, Brian McQuarrie and wife, Deborah of Fort Fairfield; sister-in-law, Brenda McQuarrie of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Nathaniel, Samantha, Liam, and Thomas.
A memorial service with the final bell ceremony will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 2, 2017, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, with Rev. Chad Poland, pastor and teacher, and Rev. Renee U. Garrett/M. Div., Minister of Christian Nurture, officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service in the Church Vestry.
