102 Years Ago – Dec. 9, 1915

Game and social — The basketball game at the Lyric between the town team and Washburn High School resulted in a victory for the town team. Nevertheless, it gave the high school boys a good practice and showed that they’re developing a strong team. A social was enjoyed after the game.

Coldvale OES — At a meeting of Coldvale Chapter OES the following officers were elected: matron, Mrs. O. K. Story; patron, R. W. Chapman; associate matron, Mrs. G. R. Umphrey; conductress, Miss Marcella Hines; associate conductress, Mrs. Guy Durepo; secretary, Mrs. I. F. Smith; treasurer, Mrs. W. H. Wilder.

75 Years Ago – Dec. 3, 1942

Baez elected — Mrs. Raphael Baez, wife of the commanding officer of Presque Isle Army Air Field, was elected honorary president of the Presque Isle Officers’ Wives club during a meeting and tea held at the officers’ club. Named chairman of the organization was Mrs. Robert Owen, wife of the executive officer of the post. Mrs. R. Ratliffe was elected  publicity chairman of the group.

Parkhurst on committee — Carolyn Parkhurst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin E. Parkhurst, Presque Isle, was named a member of the committee at Bates College which plans the annual Winter Carnival. Miss Parkhurst, a junior; on the committee for the Hop, the dance which climaxes the festivities; a member of the college concert orchestra at Bates, as well as on the board of the Women’s Student Government.

50 Years Ago – Dec. 6, 1967

Counseling aide — Louis Page, Aroostook County supervisor of Operation Mainstream, announced the appointment of Elizabeth Hanley to his staff of counseling aides in the Presque Isle area. A native of Presque Isle, she graduated from Presque Isle High School and attended Westbrook Junior College. She was previously employed by the Olin Mills Studio, Augusta.

Beet contest — The Northern National Bank announced the winners of a contest for the largest sugar beets grown in 1967. First place winner received $25 was Harry Prout of Bowdoinham; second place went to Lewis H. Cote of St. David; and third place winner was Wendell Bubar of Fort Fairfield. The winning beet weighed 13 lbs. 10 oz. It was interesting to note that these winners all grew beets for the first time.

25 Years Ago – Dec. 2, 1992

FFA brought home gold — The Presque Isle Future Farmers of America Chapter marketing plan team won first place at the 65th National FFA Convention in Kansas City. Competing against six other teams from across the nation, Presque Isle was represented by Cory Johnston, Scott Pangburn, Jason Johnston and team coach Ray Chelewski. The team’s plan was “Salmon: From Tank to Table.” This was the first year of competition in market planning and may be the first national competition to be won by an FFA team from Maine, according to a team spokesman.

Community award — Local Prudential Insurance agent Ron McArdle of Presque Isle received a $5,000 Community Champions Award for the Battered Women’s Project. The competitive awards were given to agents who volunteer for local non-profit organizations. McArdle volunteered for the project and its hotline; the funds were given to the Battered Women’s Project Endowment Fund.
