TAMC hosts free ice skating at Presque Isle Forum

Around 260 individuals crowded into the lobby and ice-skating rink at the Presque Isle Forum on Sunday for the second annual TAMC Free Skate.  The popular event kicked off The Aroostook Medical Center’s 2018 Fit and Fun Winter Challenge series.

The hospital offers two Fit and Fun series each year, in winter and summer, that encourage community members to stay active throughout the year and participate in various activities that promote healthy lifestyles. All events are free or low cost at $5 or less, and individuals have the chance to win prizes by having their passport punch cards stamped at the third, fifth, seventh and 10th events that they attend.

“We have a lot of skaters here who have never been to the Forum or have never ice skated before, so this is a good way for families to give it a try without the activity costing them a fortune,” Jamie Guerrette, TAMC community health specialist, said Sunday.

Joanna Gervais, of Stockholm, brought her daughters Sage Gervais, 8, and Quinn Gervais, 5, ice skating for Sage’s birthday. Sunday’s event marked the second time that the Gervais family has attended TAMC’s Free Skate and Joanna Gervais noted that they would definitely come again.

“I thought that this would be a great way for them to try skating without us having to spend a lot of money,” Gervais said, as she skated behind Quinn, with Sage gliding along the ice ahead of them.

The next TAMC Free Skate will be held on Sunday, Feb. 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Forum. Like with the first skating event, 200 skaters, not including spectators, will be allowed on the rink at a time and TAMC will provide free skate rentals as supplies last.  More skaters will be allowed in as people leave and the Forum’s concession stand will be open.
