Tuesday’s wintry weather wiped out a full slate of scheduled sporting events, leaving local athletic directors scrambling to reschedule games.

The Fort Fairfield boys game at Hodgdon has been move to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday; Calais boys at Houlton has been rescheduled to Friday at 7 p.m.; Highview Christian boys and girls at East Grand has been postponed (no make up date announced); Greater Houlton Christian Academy boys at Wisdom has been postponed (no make up date announced); and Katahdin at Southern Aroostook has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25.

Presque Isle’s scheduled doubleheader against John Bapst also was called off. The girls now will play Wednesday at 6 p.m., while the boys will play Wednesday, Jan. 31, also at 6 p.m. Washburn’s doubleheader at Ashland has been moved to Monday, Jan. 29. The girls game will take place at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7 p.m.

On Monday, Madawaska hosted a classic-style ski meet. All the local teams except for Presque Isle participated. Caribou kept its winning streak alive with victories in both the boys and girls divisions.

The Vikings boys scored 14 points, which put them ahead of Fort Kent (28), MSSM (46), Madawaska (55) and Ashland (67). The following is a recap of the four basketball games played Monday.

Class D Southern Aroostook is now 11-2 with both losses coming to the defending Class B North champs, who are now in Class C.

Teagan Ewings, Aspen Flewelling and Abbie Worthley had six points each for Houlton.

For the Warriors, Kacy Daggett scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Makaelyn Porter and Kassidy Mathers both had eight points.

SA led 17-15 after the first quarter, but Houlton went up 26-21 at the half. SA regained the lead in the third period, 36-34 before Houlton rallied in the final frame.

Hodgdon girls 30, Katahdin 27 — Hodgdon overcame a slow start, in which the Hawks did not score a basket in the entire first quarter, by rallying to beat Katahdin at home Monday evening.

Janelle Goff led the Hawks with eight points, while Sydney Howell added seven. Katahdin’s Haley Landry led all players with 10 points, while Natalie Rickards added six.

“The girls worked so hard tonight, putting every stitch of effort into this game,” Hodgdon coach Wendell Harvey said. “Sometimes, when things are not going right, you have to change things up.”

That change up involved putting a fresh set of players on the floor in the second quarter to press more on defense and the strategy paid off as Hodgdon was able to capitalize on several Katahdin turnovers.

The Cougars entered the game minus one of its starters — Danielle Libby — who was ill. The team’s depth was further compromised when Lily Cullen, Rickards and Hannah Kyllonen all fouled out of the game late in the second half.

“We got into huge foul trouble and had way too many turnovers,” Katahdin coach Jona Fitzpatrick said. “Missing our point guard hurt tonight and Hodgdon really battled back, and their defense bothered us. Coach Harvey does a great job with his kids.”

The coach added she thought her squad played aggressive defense, but will need to limit its fouls in future games if they want to come away with more victories.

Katahdin led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter, and was up 15-9 at halftime. In the third period, the Hawks shutout Katahdin to take a 19-15 lead.

GHCA 71, East Grand 37 — At Danforth Monday, Parker Brewer netted 16 points as the Eagles soared to victory over East Grand. Isaac Potter added 12, Jeremy Stone had 10

and Cole Winslow chipped in nine for GHCA. Matthew Potter paced East Grand with 15 points. Thomas Gilman and Isaac Crone each had five.

GHCA led 13-6, 29-13 and 52-23 at the quarter breaks.

Central Aroostook boys 74, Easton 39 — On Monday in Easton, the Panthers led 24-2 after the first quarter and went on to the easy victory.

Freshman Josh Thomas came off the bench to score nine of his 11 points in the opening period to spark Central Aroostook (12-3). Ben Thomas led the Panthers with 14 points and Brayden Bradbury also tallied 11.

Austin Carver, a reserve player for 7-6 Easton, paced his team’s offense with 11 points and Noah Hanscomb tossed in 10.
