Chamber responds to phone scam

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce was recently involved in a phone scam in which an unknown individual made at least one call to an Aroostook County business owner while claiming to be from the chamber.

In mid-January, Lisa Wark, executive assistant for the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce, said she received a call from a County business owner, who wished not to be identified. The business owner, who is not a member of the Chamber, had received a call from someone who claimed that they were from the Chamber, but asked personal questions related to his business.

He then hung up on the caller and notified the Chamber, who confirmed that they would not make calls that asked for personal information.

“If we call any business, we do so for the purpose of updating our directory, sales or event information and would only ask for addresses, phone numbers, emails and website addresses,” Wark said.

Wark notified the Presque Isle Police Department of the phone scam. She also posted alerts on the Chamber’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages to make the public aware of the scam and sent an email to the Chamber’s 400 members.

Anyone who receives a phone call from the number 207-812-3768 Ellsworth should contact the Presque Isle Police Department at (207) 764-2535 and the Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection’s fraud hotline at 1-855-303-9470.
