CARIBOU, Maine — The National Weather Service office in Caribou has issued a windchill advisory beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, Feb. 2, and lasting until noon on Saturday, Feb. 3.
Issued at 11:48 a.m. on Feb. 2, the advisory involves parts of Aroostook as well as Piscataquis and Somerset counties, including Allagash, Clayton Lake, Madawaska, Fort Kent, Frenchville, Presque Isle, Caribou, Van Buren, Mars Hill, Baker Lake, Billy-Jack Depot, Baxter St Park, Chamberlain Lake, Churchill Dam, Mount Katahdin, Greenville, Monson, and Blanchard.
Forecasters said very cold wind chills will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin. Expect wind chills to range from 15 below zero to 30 below zero. Weather officials advised residents to keep pets inside and make sure vulnerable pipes are protected.
A Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills, which can cause frostbite and hypothermia. People should protect themselves by wearing hats and gloves.
