With season winding down, hoop squads have busy weekend of games

Most of the local varsity sports teams are in action this weekend as things begin to wind down on the winter season. 

On Friday, basketball games on the docket include doubleheaders in both Ashland and Mars Hill. The Hornets host Van Buren, while the Central Aroostook Panthers are home against Madawaska. In both, the girls game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys contest at 7 p.m.

Southern Aroostook girls head to St. Agatha to face Wisdom at 5 p.m.; Easton is in Stacyville to take on the Katahdin girls with a scheduled tip time of 6 p.m.; Hodgdon girls travel to Woodland for a 6:30 p.m. game; and the Houlton girls play at Central of East Corinth at 7 p.m.

In boys action, Greater Houlton Christian Academy plays Shead in Eastport at 5 p.m. and Mattanawcook Academy comes to Houlton for a 7 p.m. game

Also on Friday, a Nordic ski meet is being held at the Fort Kent Outdoor Center beginning at 3 p.m.\

On Saturday, three basketball doubleheaders are planned. East Grand travels to Washburn (girls at 1 p.m. and boys at 2:30 p.m.), John Bapst is at Caribou (girls at 1:30 p.m. and boys at 4:30 p.m.); Wisdom travels to Katahdin for a pair of games (girls at 2 p.m., boys at 3:30 p.m.); and Hermon pays a visit to Presque Isle (girls at 3 p.m. and boys at 4:30 p.m.)

The Presque Isle hockey team plays its fourth consecutive road game, this one against Messalonskee at 2 p.m. The Houlton-Hodgdon-Southern Aroostook-Katahdin Black Hawks travel to Camden Hills at 3:20 p.m.

The Caribou wrestling team begins its postseason with the Penobscot Valley Conference championships at Penobscot Valley High School in Howland. The meet kicks off at 9:30 a.m.

The Carlisle swim team hosts Foxcroft Academy in its final home meet of the season in Limestone at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday’s alpine ski meet at Bigrock in Mars Hill has been cancelled due to the expected dangerous wind chill temperatures, according to SAD 1 Athletic Administrator Mark White.

Summaries of Thursday’s basketball games are as follows:

Girls basketball

Washburn 40, Easton 37 — The Beavers needed overtime to sneak away with a victory over the host Bears.

Kassie Farley scored 21 points and Alexis Carney added 12 for Washburn, now 4-11 on the season.

Cecilia Morin’s eight points led 4-12 Easton. Lydia Ferris added seven and Delaney Leach and Eva Callioras six each.

At Easton on Thursday night, Kassie Farley scored a game-high 21 points and Alexis Carney complemented her with 12 as Washburn improved to 4-11 with the overtime triumph.

Cecilia Morin had eight points and Lydia Ferris had seven more for 4-12 Easton. Delaney Leach and Eva Callioras added six apiece.

Boys basketball

Easton 57, Washburn 37 — On Senior Night at Washburn District High School, the Beavers trailed by just one point at halftime in their attempt to break their season-long losing streak, but the Bears went on a 26-7 in the third quarter to come away with the victory.

Keegan Kinney led a balanced attack for the Bears, now 10-6, with 12 points. Kyle Flewelling and Camden Michaud added 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Collin Sotomayor chipped in with eight.

Konner Jordan had a game-high 19 points along with nine rebounds and five steals for the 0-16 Beavers. Carvor Pendexter and Patrick Saucier combined for 11 points and 22 rebounds.

Southern Aroostook 57, Hodgdon 54 — At Dyer Brook, the Class D North Warriors of Southern Aroostook knocked off Class C Hodgdon for the second time this season. SACS improves to 5-11, while Hodgdon falls to 5-12. Individual results were not reported.
